‘Flats’ is a metaphorical sequence, which is about a figure getting stuck in a concrete block of flats. Created from a series of real interviews, the piece relates to thought patterns that people can experience through depression. Taking influence from many art forms including Buster Keaton’s slapstick cinema, the figure flows through a sequence of struggles, like a dark dance. The stop-motion animation was created from silhouetted paper cut- outs and forms part of my MA project which was called 'Talking Underwater with a mouthful of Cement'. The animation is comprised of moving imagery to a haunting soundtrack by Jessica Marlowe.
